Ames Chapter Accounting & Financial Women's Alliance

Welcome!

Join Ames, Iowa Chapter AFWA today!

The Accounting & Financial Women's Alliance (AFWA) (formerly American Society of Women Accountants or ASWA) was formed in 1938 to increase the opportunities for women in all fields of accounting and finance. The Ames Chapter of the Accounting & Financial Women's Alliance was founded in 1990 and currently has 20 members. The Chapter welcomes members at every stage of their accounting or finance careers, from intern to retirement. Student members can join at reduced rates. For membership information, contact the membership committee at membership@amesafwa.org. Click here to join.

The Ames Chapter focuses its membership efforts on the Story, Boone and Marshall county areas, although some members are from other areas around the state. Like the national organization, the Ames Chapter has members with diverse backgrounds and interests who work in public accounting, education, government, and private industry.

The Ames Chapter hosts monthly meetings in the Ames area and normally provides an hour of continuing education at each meeting. Meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday evening of each month and include opportunities for networking with members, speakers, and guests, as well as earning continuing education, and participating in the monthly membership meeting. The Chapter also hosts monthly lunches as an additional opportunity for our members to build their professional networks.

Because the Ames Chapter is small, new members are very quickly able to serve in leadership roles at the chapter level. Several members who began by serving as leaders in the Ames Chapter have taken on roles in the National leadership. A member of the Ames Chapter served as the National President in 2013-2014.

The Ames Chapter is also proud to sponsor two scholarships for area students: the Beverly M. Wandling Memorial Scholarship for accounting and finance students, and the Kathleen M. Strum Memorial Scholarship for non-traditional accounting students with children. Applications for the 2018 scholarships will be due in early 2018. Click here for more information or contact scholarship@amesafwa.org.

The mission of the Accounting & Financial Women's Alliance is to enable women in all accounting and finance fields to achieve their full potential and to contribute to their profession.

AFWA Vision: AFWA members are empowered professionals who succeed with passion and integrity.
